Paralegal Degree Alternatives

If you decide that pursuing a degree as a paralegal, there are a few things you should consider. What type of degree do you want?

There is an associates degree that you can complete in as little as 15 months and there are bachelor and master's degrees that will take up to 4 years to complete. The type of degree you want should be based on how well you enjoy the legal system and if you plan to work in the legal system as a permanent career. If you get an associates degree, you can earn good money and get a great feel for what being a paralegal is all about. The bachelors and masters degrees are more geared for those who know that being a paralegal is their dream and they will enjoy it for many years. These degrees don't come cheap so if after a few sets of classes you decide you don't like the legal world, you should cut your losses and think about something else that interests you.

With your degree as a paralegal, you will work closely with attorneys most of the time. The basis of the paralegal job is to take the workload off the attorneys and handle much of their paperwork and research as they get ready to present a case or plan of action. You will spend a lot of time at a computer and a desk researching cases, writing reports, and doing all the stuff attorneys don't have time for themselves. You will be part of a team that can lead your attorney or lawfirm to great success. Their are many responsiblities being a paralegal but you are not allowed to actively practice law such as giving legal advice, representing clients in court, or suggesting fees.

Paralegals with degrees make considerably more than those with only certificates. In addition to your degree, you might want to get the certificate as well! This will increae your employability and demand higher wages when in the job market. Some businesses might even require that you have both.

There are many different ways you can get your degree as a paralegal. You can attend a university or secondary school in the area where you live or you can get your degree online. You should select the method most convenient or appealing to your individual tastes. This is a high demand profession and by getting a degree as a paralegal, you will always have the opportunity for work.
