The salaries of paralegals vary considerably. In the United States the mean annual hourly wage of paralegals and legal assistants in 2010 was $23.87 and the corresponding mean annual salary was $49,640. The salary a paralegal earns depends on many factors, such as your relevant work experience and education, the industry you are working in, the size of your employer and the geographical area where the job is located.

Usually larger employers are able to pay higher salaries than smaller organizations. And paralegals that are working on larger metropolitan areas typically earn more than their colleagues working in more sparsely populated regions.

In 2010, the bottom 10 percent earned annually less than $29,460, while the top 10 percent earned more than $ 74,870. The middle 50 percent earned between $36,230 and $59,910.

For example, on Legal Services the annual mean wage was $47,690, on Federal Executive Branch $64,210, on Local Government $50,630, on State Government $43,970 and on Management of Companies and Enterprises it was $58,440 (2010). The average annual salary in Insurance carriers was $ 52,200 and in Employment services $50,050 (2008).

In 2008 about 70% of paralegals and legal assistants worked for private law firms. Most of the remaining 30% worked for government or for corporate legal departments.

Paralegals who work as freelancers may earn more than paralegal employees, but in order to work as a successful freelancer one should have a lot of work experience.

In addition to the actual salary, many paralegals get bonuses partly to make up for their long working hours. Paralegals also typically receive life insurance, dental insurance, paid sick leave, vacation and personal paid time off.

A quick and easy way to reach your goal of becoming a paralegal is to enroll in an online paralegal program. These programs are dedicated to helping you achieve your paralegal certificate or degree in a very short time. These are faster than a typical online university because they specialize in only training paralegals. All your counselors and teachers are well versed in paralegal aspects and are able to help you very quickly and effectively.

The main type of online paralegal program has you enroll and then over a period of 7-9 months of school, you will take the paralegal certification test and should be able to pass it. Doing all of your assignments and reading all your material is crucial to your success when you are taking classes online. You might view lectures streamed from the actual classroom or you might be on your own to study at your leisure and turn in assignments a few times a week. Each school is different so you will want to find the one that best suits what you are looking for.

Many of these programs offer degrees as well as certificates. This is a longer process and will take between 5 months to 3 years longer than your basic certificate depending on what type of degree you are pursuing. A good idea for someone considering becoming a paralegal is to research the average wages in their area, what education the employers recommend, and make sure you are interested in the way the legal system works.

While some employers will want degrees, many will be happy with the certificate. You could always get the certificate, get a paralegal job, and then continue with the program you are using to get your degree as you get experience on the job. By doing it this way, you can advance up the legal ladder at a fairly decent pace but it will require a lot of devotion and hard work. Only you can set your own pace and know your limits when it comes to combining education with work.

The average paralegal makes over $30,000 a year with the certificate alone, so it is always a good idea to improve your worth in the marketplace by attending extra classes when you can. Some employers might help pay for you to earn a degree, thereby increasing what they can charge customers for your services.

Paralegals are highly needed all across the world to help attorneys with their cases and aid corporations with many types of legal matters. This is a growing profession and is a good choice in the career market.

There are many options for the aspiring paralegal to get a great educational background online. Many different schools and universities offer quick and easy paralegal programs you can attend from the comfort of your own home and even at any time of day you might like.

These programs all vary in many aspects however. Do you want to get a certificate or degree as fast as possible? Maybe you are being required by your current paralegal job to take a certain number of classes per year? You need to decide what you want and how fast you want it. Of course, like most things in life, the faster you want something, the odds are you will have to pay a bit more for that speed and convenience.

Specialized Paralegal Programs

On the internet, you have at your disposal many websites that will offer you very fast training to realize your dream of becoming a certified paralegal or receiving you associates degree. These websites are legal, accredited schools that offer legitimate programs that specialize only in paralegal education. If you decided you want to be a paralegal as fast as possible, this is the best choice available to you. These websites offer forum based or live classes over the internet and most will even give your books to you in a format to be viewed on your computer, instead of sending them to you. These sites are dedicated to get you that certificate or degree quickly and easily but might cost a bit more than a standard online university per class.

Online Universities

All over the internet, you see advertisements for online universities that promise to give you a full education without leaving your house. These schools are very similar to the specialized ones except they offer everything a normal university would. There are elective classes, prerequisite classes, and more interaction with your virtual classmates and teachers. These schools are all accredited and are guaranteed to get you to your goal. The only bad thing is the prerequisite classes. You will have to meet their minimum credit requirement before you can branch off into the paralegal field most of the time. This includes a number of English classes, math, science, etc.. If you are looking for the real college experience while becoming a paralegal this is the path for you. This is a good way to go if you want to use grants and financial aid as your primary source of tuition as specialized programs don’t always accept that. You will graduate with many credits and you will never have to take those classes again if you decide to take a different path later on.

It is expected that paralegal demand will be increased by over 60% between now and 2012. Paralegals are needed in law offices, corporations, public offices, and government offices all over the world. Paralegals have a lot of responsibility when it comes to keeping law firms organized and all businesses that deal with the law running smoothly.

Paralegals are responsible for many things such as:

*Conducting research on statutes and cases;

* Preparing pleadings and drafting interrogatories;

* Interviewing clients and witnesses;

* Organizing case materials;

* Managing the work of their team in the workplace;

* Preparing briefs, motions, complaints, wills, contracts.

Paralegals work with attorneys but are not allowed to provide legal services to the public unless the law in their area allows that. Attorneys rely on their paralegals to do a great deal of work for them in preparing documents and organizing information for their various cases. Every good lawyer has a great paralegal or two working for them or their firm.

Law offices especially face overwhelming amounts of cases every year and without the paralegals they employ, would never be able to keep up with their caseloads. Many corporations employ paralegals to review documents and policies before they are presented to their shareholders or council members for approval also. There is no shortage of work for paralegals and they are held in very high regard in the legal community. They are the workhorses of the legal system and do more than they are given credit for. Many large companies keep their own legal team including attorneys and paralegals under their direct employ instead of hiring from a separate law office. This keeps costs very low and guarantees many people a job on their legal team.

In addition to law firms and corporations, there are always non-profit groups that are in need of paralegals. The public defenders office is a great example. This allows you to help those less fortunate than you and make great salary while doing your community a great service.

Paralegals can specialize in many different fields of law. There is criminal law which defends and prosecutes criminals. Family law including divorce and custody cases as well as wills, estates, and bankruptcy. Federal agencies are always seeking paralegals with a broad range of skills but specializing in federal laws as opposed to local and state laws. The choice is yours and you should take the time to figure out what your preferred area of expertise is and decide where to begin.

If truth is to be known, a paralegal does not have to be a graduate of a paralegal course to become one. There are many people who are now paralegals but used to be a teacher, a housewife, doctor, business owner, secretary, accountant, nurse and even lawyers. One enrols in one of the paralegal courses that are available these days to give them the basic know-how, training that is expected of them when they become hired to become as one.

The basic requirements of becoming a paralegal are the following: Keen interest in the law is always a prerequisite. He or she should always be curious. Good communication skills are also important in becoming a good paralegal. And of course, the other traits such as being dependable, responsible, has good decision making skills and dedication to the tasks assigned to them is always a must.

Those who are interested in enrolling in one of the paralegal courses should already be a graduate of a 4-year college degree. So those who do not have one yet, should go and get themselves one. Although not all schools require this but it is always best to have it. Remember that the trouble that you will be going through now is worth it in the end when you are already practicing your paralegal career and earning those big bucks.

Lawyers are usually assisted in their jobs by paralegals. Paralegals perform a lot of the same things as lawyers except tasks considered to be actually practicing law itself. Paralegals work directly under the supervision of lawyers and are delegated many, many tasks by the lawyers they are working with. They do a majority of the background work for lawyers.

While preparing cases for trial, paralegals investigate and organize all the facts of cases and make sure they have found all the relevant information that pertains to that case. Paralegals also conduct legal research to find out about appropriate judicial decisions, legal articles, laws, and other materials that might help build a case.

Paralegals analyze and organize all of the information they gather and prepare written reports that lawyers use when determining how a particular case should be handled. If the lawyers decide a client should be filing a lawsuit, paralegals help prepare the arguments, pleadings, and motions that will be filed with the court as well as obtain affidavits. All documents and materials relating to a case are organized and handled by the paralegal.

The lawyers rely on the paralegal to be efficient, organized, and trustworthy. Paralegals and lawyers that work on large cases should be well aware that much of what they are doing may be confidential in nature and having a good relationship between the lawyer and paralegal helps ensure no sensitive information leaves the office.

While lawyers make many appearances in the courtroom, the paralegal doesn’t leave the office very much. Most of their work is in law libraries, desks, and computer databases. It can be frustrating for a new paralegal who just prepares similar documents over and over if they work for a lawyer or firm that has a very specialized clientele. A lot of new paralegals have trouble with the first few months if they are hit with repetition but if they stick with it, they will move up the paralegal ladder and receive more new and exciting assignments.Paralegals don’t get to share the spotlight with the lawyers they work for very much but often receive bonuses for great performance and some lawyers might even give them a commission for all their hard work on long and drawn out cases.

In general, the paralegal-lawyer relationship is very close and they spend a great deal of time working together daily. Lawyers that have preferred paralegals sometimes ask them to come with them when they get promoted or open their own firms. This is a great reason to always cement that relationship and do great work.

So you have decided to check into the exciting world of becoming a paralegal though online education. This is a very convenient and effective way to either start a new and exciting career or increase your career options. The demand for trained paralegals is at an all time high all over the world and employers everywhere are looking for dedicated people who have a love of the legal system.

Unfortunately, not many employers will hire a paralegal who has no education or previous experience in the legal area. Some will, but not many and certainly not in a large city. To get the education and training you need to succeed in this career field, you need to find a program or school online that best meets your individual needs.

Online Universities

Online universities are a wonderful way to continue your education and work towards your goal of becoming a paralegal. With options ranging from a basic certification all the way up to a masters degree, online universities are all over the internet and have a broad range of ways to teach you what you need to know. Some online universities will send you physical books, some will use much cheaper E-books you can read while sitting at your computer. Some will require you to watch a live lecture over the internet that is broadcast from a professor, while some will be mostly reading and studying by yourself and turning in assignments on time. As the potential student who will pay for this opportunity, you need to make sure you research exactly what type of paralegal you would like to be and make sure you find the online university that meets your needs.

Online “quick” programs

There are numerous other ways to get an associates degree or certificate fairly quickly as compared to a full online university. Many programs are completely dedicated to only teaching and training new paralegals in an online environment. Granted these are very similar to online universities except they are much more streamlined and will get you the results you need in less time. The downside is they might cost more up front than an online university. Luckily, many of these will accept financial aid so you won’t feel such a drain on your wallet. These programs jump you right into classes about law instead of worrying about language and math skills that many universities may require. If you want that certificate and you don’t want to mess around this is a wonderful route to take. You might want to call around your area and make sure employers will take this type of certificate as some might be a bit skeptical. Overall though, the demand for paralegals is high enough you should be able to get a job fairly easy and prove yourself to your employer by demonstrating what you have learned.

I’m sure you have seen ads on television and the internet promising you a lucrative career in the paralegal profession. What exactly do paralegals do anyway and what is required to become one? Paralegals are often referred to as “legal assistants”. Their job is to do tasks that lawyers would normally do but usually don’t have the time for. There are many different things paralegals are responsible for but they do not represent people in court, give legal advice, or establish any types of payments.

Paralegals can investigate many aspects of a case. They track down all sorts of information that is relevant to a current case from researching prior judgements on similar cases to reading articles about laws on their type of case. They are very important to help attorneys prepare all their material for trials, hearings, etc..

Paralegals often are responsible for all the written materials that an attorney will refer to as he decides how he is going to state his case in front of a judge and jury. This is a big responsibility and paralegals must be educated in court motions, draft pleadings and all types of paperwork that is necessary for a legal argument in court.

Paralegals also help attorneys in the courtroom by keeping vital documents organized and easy for the attorney to access when needed. Paralegals might help in trademark applications, depositions, shareholder agreements, estate matters, and many other areas you would seek an attorney for.

There are many places paralegals can work. Any company that has business involving immigration, labor laws, entertainment, real estate, and bankruptcy all need the help of a well trained paralegal so there is no short demand for this profession. A good example of what a paralegal does can be seen in the movie Erin Brockovich. She researched and helped in such a great way she got her own movie!

If you are going to get into the paralegal profession, you will want to have a strong motivating force to help people and want to get more familiar with the legal field. This can be a very lucrative and rewarding career for those with a passion for law. If this sounds like the type of career for you there are many ways to go about becoming a paralegal. There are schools in most major cities and many online opportunities to begin your career in the paralegal field.

When attorneys want to keep fees low enough to remain a competitive member of the law community, they employ professional paralegals to help them with their practice. The amount and type of tasks delegated to the paralegal all depends on the skill and experience of the paralegal as well as the level of trust in the attorney-paralegal relationship.

There is an underlying understanding that paralegals can do everything attorneys can do except set fees, appear in court, and give legal advice. The invisible line is how much an attorney lets a paralegal participate in as to not get the paralegal entangled if there ever is a malpractice suit.

The courts recognize that attorneys cannot handle everything by themselves so they must have employees to help them out with research, paperwork, court documents, and many other aspects of the legal system. Usually the attorney will take responsibility for everything the paralegal does since they should be supervising and reviewing all the material that comes from the paralegal. Sometimes things get botched but not very often. It comes down to the attorney themselves who are legally responsible for their clients work.

Clients may sometimes get upset if they hire an attorney but only receive the work that a paralegal has done in place of the attorney. This doesn’t translate to actual court representation but can cause some strife between client and attorney.

The paralegal typically meets with clients and conducts preliminary interviews before the client ever sees the attorney. Many times, the client won’t need the actual attorney’s help at all. By meeting with the paralegal first, the clients can save a lot of money in the long run as they usually have set fees as opposed to the attorneys hourly charges.

Paralegals and attorneys go hand in hand in the legal system. Attorneys are expected to be in the courtroom often and while they are there, the paralegal can assist them or stay behind to work on other cases that need attention. Attorneys would be very stressed and have an enormous workload if it weren’t for the help of paralegals. This also helps reduce costs for the clients. Imagine if you had to pay $300 an hour for an attorney when it might take them 2 days for a large case just filing paperwork or looking up prior judicial rulings. That would cost a fortune and the average person would have to represent themselves.

Paralegals not only help the attorney, they help the overall functioning and pricing of all aspects of the legal system.

If you decide that pursuing a degree as a paralegal, there are a few things you should consider. What type of degree do you want? There is an associates degree that you can complete in as little as 15 months and there are bachelor and master’s degrees that will take up to 4 years to complete. The type of degree you want should be based on how well you enjoy the legal system and if you plan to work in the legal system as a permanent career. If you get an associates degree, you can earn good money and get a great feel for what being a paralegal is all about. The bachelors and masters degrees are more geared for those who know that being a paralegal is their dream and they will enjoy it for many years. These degrees don’t come cheap so if after a few sets of classes you decide you don’t like the legal world, you should cut your losses and think about something else that interests you.

With your degree as a paralegal, you will work closely with attorneys most of the time. The basis of the paralegal job is to take the workload off the attorneys and handle much of their paperwork and research as they get ready to present a case or plan of action. You will spend a lot of time at a computer and a desk researching cases, writing reports, and doing all the stuff attorneys don’t have time for themselves. You will be part of a team that can lead your attorney or lawfirm to great success. There are many responsiblities being a paralegal but you are not allowed to actively practice law, such as giving legal advice, representing clients in court, or suggesting fees.

Paralegals with degrees make considerably more than those with only certificates. In addition to your degree, you might want to get the certificate as well! This will increase your employability and demand higher wages when in the job market. Some businesses might even require that you have both.

There are many different ways you can get your degree as a paralegal. You can attend a university or secondary school in the area where you live or you can get your degree online. You should select the method most convenient or appealing to your individual tastes. This is a high demand profession and by getting a degree as a paralegal, you will always have the opportunity for work.
