Paralegal Careers: An Entry To The Legal Profession?

Paralegals, also known as legal assistants play a very important role in the legal system. The paralegal career was born when lawyers and firms were trying to keep the cost of legal services low and find a way to ease the burden on lawyers and law firms.

Paralegals basically carry out tasks that don't require an attorney to complete. They cannot actually practice law themselves but are the driving force behind successful legal businesses.

There are many fields you could choose after you become a paralegal. Here is a short summary of just a few of them.

Law Office Employment

Paralegals are the backbone of any law office. They can conduct preliminary interviews with potential clients, handle phone calls, research, reports, and paper work. Law offices like to hire paralegals with degrees a bit more than just certifications but this also varys from office to office and town to town. Paralegals will help the attorneys at the law office by doing many things that are just to time consuming and expensive for an attorney to do.

Low income legal aid.

This is a wonderful area for the paralegal with a great charitable streak. Low income individuals make up an enormous chunk of people seeking legal assistance or advice. This field provides reduced cost or free legal assistance to people who cannot afford an attorney themselves but don't want to risk representing themselves in court. You will give your services to the poor, homeless, and unemployed and this can be a very fulfilling experience for you. There is always high demand for paralegals in this field and the pay is very competitive.

Legislation assistants

Ever wonder what exactly goes on in your local Capitol building? Well, this is the place for you! Most legislative work is very closely related to the law and legislators have a need for paralegals that can deal with all their paperwork efficiently. This is a very high workload for a paralegal but can be a great way to get an up close look at the politics in your area.

Corporations

Many paralegals work in legal departments of corporate offices. Large businesses tend to have their own professional law team always at hand in case of trouble and to help with certain legal transactions. By hiring paralegals, companies save a lot of money than having a full staff of attorneys at hand. Corporations pay very well and have a reasonable workload.

There are many more opportunities for a paralegal than those listed here. You just need to research online and in local papers to see the multitude of careers as a paralegal.
